Connectives

1. Addition
 And, besides, moreover, in addition, furthermore.

  •  I went to dinner after class,and later in the evening I went downtown to a movie.
  • The lesson was not very interesting; besides, it was much too long.
  • I’m not interested in seeing that movie; moreover, I have work to do.
  • The student speaks English well; in addition, he seems to know a lot about our customs.
  • The girl must know how to type; furthermore, she should have some knowledge of shorthand.
     

2. Contrast
But, yet, still, however, nevertheless, on the other hand.

  • John was a good student in English, but he failed in mathematics.
  • He understands English, yet he can’t speak it.
  • He knows English; still, he doesn’t participate in class.
  • I am getting along quite well; however, my roommate is not doing so well.
  • Mary was sick; nevertheless, she came to class.
  • This house is not very comfortable; on the other hand, it has an excellent location.

3. Alternative
Either-or, otherwise

  • Either you must pay him this week, or he will call his lawyer. 
  • You must stay; otherwise, he will be disappointed.
     

4. Consequence
So, therefore, as a result, for that reason, as a consequence

  • The car broke down; so, they had to ride the bus.
  • The tape recorder was not working properly; therefore, the recording was not very clear.
  • The sergeant disobeyed the order; as a result, (as a consequence) he was punished.
     

5. Amplification
In fact, for instance, for example, as a matter of fact

  • There was considerable turbulence; in fact, it was the worst I had ever experienced.
  • The students are making excellent progress; for instance, they have begun to think in English.
  • My friend speaks several languages; for example, he speaks French, Russian and German.
  • It was hot yesterday; as a matter of fact, it was 100 degrees.

6. Substitution

  • He didn’t go downtown; instead, he stayed home and studied.
